Research countries before taking out international mortgages

Individuals applying for an international mortgage in order to enable them to start a new life abroad would be wise to carry out research on their destination of choice before committing to such a move.

Indeed, Anna Nicholas, journalist and author - who writes thrice weekly for Telegraph Expat - has suggested those hoping to relocate should visit the area of interest prior to making any decisions.

The industry figure noted that while a region can appear very attractive in the sun, the off-season could be a different story.

People aiming to secure an international mortgage may therefore wish to head off to the proposed spot at various times of year.

For those with their mind set on a move to Spain, Ms Nicholas - whose books include A Lizard in my Luggage, Cat on a Hot Tiled Roof, Goats from a Small Island and Donkeys on my Doorstep - warned the country is no longer cheap, adding: "Any person from the UK considering moving should make sure they have financial assets, guaranteed employment, or a sound business concept before taking the plunge."
